The Internet is a cesspool of malware, viruses, and shady people looking to infect your computer for a myriad of reasons. It can seem overwhelming, especially given the fact that so many protection programs are actually viruses themselves. But there are some things you can do to keep your computer running smoothly.
First of all, you should always regularly clear out your cache and cookies. The options for this is usually located in ‘Tools’, and then either ‘Preferences’, or ‘Private data’. You should clear all cookies, not just your history.
Next, run a reputable spyware system at least once a week, such as Spybot S&D. Make sure to update, immunize, and check it every time it is used, to make sure all the most up to date information for detection is available.
Last, be careful of what you download, and what websites you visit. If it looks like spam, it probably is, and many links offered from friends on sites like Myspace are dangerous. That is because it is so easy to hack into an account and use it to post spyware. Illegal downloads will also commonly hold viruses and other problematic and harmful files, so don’t pirate music or movies, or at least pay attention to the size of the file.
